WHERE'S THE SUN

What is Hungary's solar power doing right now?

Quarter-hour by quarter-hour, Budapest time. The darker bands are the nights. On the night-time readings of the utility-scale plants a few tens of MW show up, but that is not sunshine, so it is drawn as zero. Consumption is the load taken from the grid plus the solar power produced locally. Gaps are missing data, not zeros.

The output of the utility-scale plants is metered by MAVIR, the transmission system operator, a few minutes behind real time. Rooftop systems (household plants of up to 50 kW) and the solar panels businesses run for their own use are not metered by anyone: MAVIR estimates them, about a quarter of an hour behind. "Right now" is the latest quarter-hour for which all three exist.

Every day MAVIR estimates how much solar power there will be the next day, quarter-hour by quarter-hour; the other power plants' schedules are planned from it. The forecast covers the utility-scale plants, rooftop systems and business panels alike.

Solar power per person (W): a country's current solar output divided by its population; the bar length is proportional to it. At the start of each row is the time of that country's latest data (Budapest time); a faded row is more than 4 hours old and is left out of the comparison. Consumption is the country's load: MAVIR's figure for Hungary, the energy-charts "Load" series for the others. Sources: MAVIR; energy-charts.info (Fraunhofer ISE, CC BY 4.0); population: Eurostat, tps00001 (1 January 2025).

In Hungary, rooftop and business production is MAVIR's estimate. For the other countries the energy-charts "Solar" series may or may not include rooftop production, depending on the country. Serbia has no solar series there, and Ukraine has no data.

Solar power's share of electricity generation: the top ten of the countries producing at least 20 TWh a year; the bar length is proportional to the share, and the amount of solar power is at the end of the row. Source: Ember, Yearly electricity data (CC BY 4.0).

    • MAVIR — the Hungarian transmission system operator: the metered output of the utility-scale solar plants, the estimated output of rooftop systems and of businesses' own-use panels, the day-ahead forecasts and the system load (from the data export of MAVIR's website, every quarter of an hour); the installed capacity comes from MAVIR's PV statistics.

    • Ember — solar power's share of electricity generation by country and year (countries producing at least 20 TWh): Yearly electricity data, CC BY 4.0. Ember publishes the latest year country by country, so its list is shorter until it is complete.

Measured values are MAVIR's metering; rooftop and business solar power is an estimate and is always labelled as such. Records and the log are computed by holanap.hu from MAVIR's data. Everything on this page is informational. Methodology (in Hungarian) · The Hungarian site
